Heather Scarecrow Festival 2011

In our little village of Heather, Leicestershire they have cut off the bus service so the youngsters, the oldies and all without transport are trapped. But in this village at least there has been no rioting. Admittedly we only have one newspaper shop and a beautician, so it would be a pretty short riot if they did, but nonetheless ten out of ten for our local youths.

Last night 16,000 police officers were deployed into London, a full 10,000 more than ever in history and thousands of people took to the streets to defend their homes and communities from looters and thugs. Homes, businesses and indeed communities have been burned to the ground and people have even been killed by these mindless thugs. In the midst of all this it is easy to forget that not all youths are like that and I figure there is no harm done in providing a light-hearted feature to remind every one of this even in this chaotic time. So here goes…

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep because Marian has got in the way!

Tonight, our wee village announced the winners of our famous scarecrow festival. This may seem mad to outsiders, but to our locals it meant creativity, competition, promotion of the village, teamwork and even fundraising at every age level. Who would want to riot in that environment? Having lived in the big cities of Glasgow, Dublin and London moving out of the big smogs to Heather, Leicestershire was a bit of a culture shock for me, but you can’t help but grow to love it here and wonder if there is something the big cities could learn from places like this.

Here is our Heather Scarecrow 2011 movie. Why not cast your own votes then compare with who the visitors to our village voted as you scroll down?

Special thanks to Meg Lee Chin for her personal permission to use her utterly amazing cover of Scarecrow on the video. We love our wee village!

No, it's not the EDL deploying to protect the people of London, it's St. George protecting the village of Heather, Leicestershire.

One Response to Heather Scarecrow Festival 2011

  1. Mike Kelly says:

Fabulous…. I should tell you about ‘Green Turtle’ in the Bahamas (home for 5 years). No-one locks doors or removes car keys. One police man 2 1/2 days a week (who wears a shiny 45 handgun). Everyone of every race/colour says hello, is really pleasant, the whole community meet at weekend for a party….paradise!
