Paul and Marian were invited as a combination to minister in Greenock Elim Pentecostal Church on Kelly Street on Sunday morning and Perth Elim Christian Life Centre in the evening. For near enough twenty-five years I served as an Elim Pentecostal minister at various levels before taking the big jump forward as a husband and wife itinerant team.
I was very nervous as these are high standard congregations with good solid pastors and I’ve lost a fair bit of my accent, which is the unforgivable sin in Greenock. However, I knew that if they started throwing hymn books at me I could get Marian back up to sing. Us Celts may appear to be up front and in your face, but we do recognise the anointing.
We wanted to be a breath of fresh air, an encouragement and of some genuine help to the folks in both Perth and Greenock. I think we did just that!
Greenock has a great singing group that was, very rare today, all male. The whole service had a real Celtic edge to it, which any visitor would sense immediately. Those fellows in that worship team can really sing and the congregation were extremely warm and friendly start to finish. I later discovered the young 19 year old and very talented worship leader is a Celtic musician. This is the sort of church you would feel safe to take your friends to and in particular friends from other countries.
Perth is radically different from Greenock as far from being Celtic in flavour it is very multicultural with a whole range of colours and continents merging together. A good few disabled people add to the mix of colour and culture. As with Greenock the Perth folk are very friendly and full of life. The Glasweigian pastor is the worship leader and he works hard at his music.
Marian and I kicked off our honeymoon in Perthshire so this was a real treat for us both and I have years and years of stories from Greenock… that I won’t mention here! My wife on the other hand had never been to a church in Greenock or Perth so it is good to find two good churches with such hard-working folk who love The Lord in one day.
